The Digambar Jain community is in shock in Rajasthan following the arrest of a Jain monk who is accused of raping of a pregnant woman and molesting another.

Karauli police have arrested Digambar Jain monk Sukumal Nandi, 38, for allegedly raping a pregnant woman. He has been sent to judicial custody for two weeks.

Currently, he has been kept in quarantine in a hospital facility and will be shifted to Bharatpur prison after reports of his Covid-19 test come.

Anil Kumar Beniwal, Superintendent of Police, Karauli, told India Today TV that the place arrested the monk after complainants confirmed the allegation levelled against Nandi before the magistrate under Section 164.

A youth lodged a complaint with police that his wife, sister-in-law and mother went to seek blessings of the Jain muni staying at Naveen Upashrary — a Jain shelter home in Hindaun.

The monk asked his sister-in-law to come along with him to the upper floor and take a coconut as a prasad.

But he allegedly molested her following which she came out.

After that, the youth’s pregnant wife went for his blessings where he raped her, after threatening to curse her and her unborn child.

When she did not return for a while, the sister-in-law went upstairs and got the door of the room opened. She was frightened to see the pregnant woman lying in pain with tears in her eyes.

Cops immediately went in for the medical examination and inspected the scene of the crime and detained the suspect.

Police arrested him at once after the women recorded their statements before the magistrate.

The report of the medical examination of the pregnant woman is awaited. The forensic report of the garments used during the crime is also awaited.

Cops persuaded Sukamal to wear clothes against the religious custom. Police searched his room and car in presence of representatives of Jain sect and found a number of condoms, mobile phones, pen drive, tablet camera, ATM cards, hard drives, laptops, and stamp papers.

Seized goods have been sent for forensic examination and only after the report comes, he would be able to reveal what the pen drives, laptops, etc carried. Some of these items were hidden in four compartments built in his car.

Further investigations are on to verify allegations that in the past, too, he had faced charges of molesting women but the community suppressed the matter.
